Wangal Reserve, Mortlake

As part of the Stage 2 upgrades at Wangal Reserve, Play Workshop developed the new play space with the City of Canada Bay Council. The design was formed around three dynamic zones of an adventure play structure, a nature play trail, and a flying fox. The circulation and articulation of these play areas encourage inclusive movement and play chances, with multiple gathering points throughout the playground. The design is enriched with detailed experiences created by artworks, sculptures, and sensory activities.

Play Workshop worked with dedication and enthusiasm to deliver an exciting design that was to the brief and embraced the incredible natural beauty of the site. This project includes an impressive adventure play structure with multiple levels, a flying fox, and a dry creek bed. The materials palette and product design speaks to the surrounding context. Additional play equipment, such as a 3-bay swing set, timber boat, jungle drum, timber chimes, custom seashell sculpture, and accessible carousel provide further interest and diverse play experiences.

Creative details are embedded into the impressive moments within the design for a bespoke touch in the form of stonework carvings, timber totems, and sculptures. Following the designs created by Indigenous artist David Cragg, who was engaged by Council, our in-house artists was able to create impressive carvings into stone and timber in-situ.

This large project was a unique opportunity which allowed Play Workshop to bring creative ideas to life and the quality of the finished result reflects the team's ingenuity. It was a pleasure to be a part of Council's development of this incredible site.
